How to Choose the Right IT Certification

A role-first approach to selecting Microsoft, Cisco, AWS, CompTIA and ITIL training

With many IT certifications available, the best starting point is not the certification name—it is the type of work you want to do. A role-first approach helps you avoid collecting unrelated certifications and creates a clearer learning pathway.

1. Choose a target role

Research roles such as helpdesk support, network engineer, system administrator, cloud administrator, data analyst or cybersecurity analyst. Compare common skills across multiple job advertisements.

2. Map certifications to the role

  • IT support: CompTIA A+, Microsoft endpoint and ITIL fundamentals
  • Networking: Network+ and Cisco CCNA/CCNP
  • Microsoft cloud: Azure fundamentals and role-based Azure certifications
  • AWS cloud: Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect pathways
  • Cybersecurity: Security+, Microsoft security and analyst pathways
  • Data: Microsoft data fundamentals, Power BI and Fabric pathways

3. Add hands-on practice

Use labs and projects to practise configuration, troubleshooting and documentation. This helps turn exam knowledge into skills you can discuss in interviews.

4. Check current vendor requirements

Certification names, exam codes and objectives change. Always confirm current requirements before booking an exam or training course.
